Orange festival in Netherlands

I regret to inform you that this “Orange Festival” is not taking place in the Netherlands. First, Orange in reference to the Netherlands refers to the monarchs; they are the House of Orange. The Orange Festival in the Netherlands, also called Queens Day, results in people wearing the Orange color and getting excessively drunk and silly. It does NOT result in people making sculptures out of fruit.

Second, the pictures clearly indicate architecture, landscape and language that is not Dutch. Many pictures have mountains. The Netherlands is flat. It is mostly reclaimed land from the sea meaning it is below sea level. The Netherlands does not have mountains. This festival took place where they have mountains.

Next, look at the signs written in fruit. The sentence "Les Contes de Perrnalt” This is not Dutch, but it is French. It means "The Tales of Perrnalt." Lastly, the buildings are very modern and this is generally not the architecture found in the Netherlands, although there are exceptions such as cities like Rotterdam. Also, citrus does not grow in the Netherlands so there is no association with the fruit orange and the House of Orange.

So where is this festival taking place? It is in the South of France where they actually grow citrus. It is from the Festival Citrusov. Sorry if you think this rains on your parade, but credit should be given where credit is due and these pictures are NOT from the Netherlands. Celebrate the French – they made some cool scenes and sculptures. I certainly would not have minded being in the South of France and seeing this festival. They really are creative.

Thank you, John. It took a bit of sleuthing before I came across your comment. I have been in the Netherlands several times on Queen's Day and had never before heard of these sculptures, nor could I associate them or the surroundings with anything in NL.

Thanks for clearing this up. I too realized that mountains, palm trees, and French were not right for the Netherlands.
One clarification: The sign is for "Tales of PERRAULT". Charles Perrault was the French author of the fairy tales depicted in the orange sculptures, such as Puss in Boots & Little Red Riding Hood.

A friend sent email with all these photos and it just didn't seem "right". I've never been to either Netherlands nor France but I have lived in Florida and California long enough to know that oranges grow in tropical or sub-tropical areas, not up as far north as the Netherlands (and I have flown through the Netherlands with an airline "pitstop" in Amsterdam but not a layover, not out of the jet). So I went googling to see if there weren't any rebuttals and found your blog. If nothing else, it would be hugely expensive to ship all those oranges and grapefruit etc up to the Netherlands - what a waste of perfectly good edible fruit, ya know? Thanks for the info!

Thank you all. I too saw vast mountains and foliage unlike anything in the netherlands, and thought that this was a mistaken attribution. Cheers to you more attentive folks for sleuthing out the real location.

Right ! These photos were not taken in the Netherlands, but in France, Côte d'Azur, where I am living since many years (I am French, you can easily understand it by my English...). Every year in MENTON (last town before the frontier with Italy , both between sea and mountain ) we have our "Fête du Citron" which lasts about 3 weeks, every year a different thema. I can send more photos to whom would be interested. Only I regret that someone with little brain wanted people to believe that there are oranges and lemons, mountains and palm-trees in Netherlands... But clever people had already put things in order....

Nicole,
I am very much interested in authorised photos from the festival for publishing in one magazin from Middle East, as well as the story about the festival. Please write me at tanja2happy@yahoo.com to talk about details. Thank you very much.
